Slain Lawmaker’s Kids Urge Trump to Remove False Conspiracy Theory Post
TL/DR –
The children of deceased Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman have asked President Trump to remove a post on Truth Social that promotes a conspiracy theory about their mother’s death. The post implies that the state’s governor, Tim Walz, had a role in Hortman’s murder, a claim that law enforcement has not substantiated. The Hortman children and the family of State Sen. John Hoffman, who was also targeted in the shooting, have called the post harmful and requested its removal.
Minnesota Lawmaker’s Kids Urge Trump to Remove Conspiracy Theory Post
Slain Minnesota lawmaker, Melissa Hortman’s children, are imploring President Donald Trump to delete a post on Truth Social that propagates a conspiracy theory ascribing Hortman’s death to the state’s governor, Tim Walz. The politically charged shootings in June, which lead to Hortman and her husband Mark’s death, also injured State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette.
Accused of this crime is Vance Boelter, who, after the biggest manhunt in Minnesota history, was charged with federal murder, and has pleaded not guilty.
A video shared by Trump, seemingly devised by another social media user, falsely ties Walz and alleged Minnesota’s state programs fraud to these murders. Walz, who was the Democratic VP nominee in 2024, termed Trump’s post as “dangerous, depraved behavior.”
The Hortmans’ children, Colin and Sophie, released heart-wrenching statements denouncing the video. Both request that Trump remove the video and apologize for spreading this counterfeit information.
Equally, the Hoffman family is also on board with the Hortmans’ sentiments, affirming that the conspiracies surrounding their parents’ deaths reflect damaging falsehoods that incite violence.
Despite this, the White House has not responded to these remarks or queries about Trump sharing the video. Coincidentally, Trump’s administration has been investigating viral fraud allegations in some Minnesota state programs.
The Justice Department’s investigations since 2022 have resulted in over 70 criminal charges, including some members of the state’s Somali community, linked with fraud in Minnesota and a nonprofit group named Feeding Our Future.
