Sununu Asserts Trump ‘Played a Role’ in Insurrection, Continues to Support Him

TL/DR –

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu says he would support Donald Trump if he ran for president again, despite the former president’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election and possible felony convictions, as he believes the economy, border security and “culture change” are more important. In an interview, Sununu, who initially supported Nikki Haley in the Republican primary and criticised Trump, claimed that concerns about democracy or felony convictions would not sway voters. He argued that issues such as inflation and border security, which he believes have worsened under President Biden, outweigh the negatives associated with Trump.

Gov. Sununu Backs Trump Despite Past Criticisms

Gov. Chris Sununu of New Hampshire declared on ABC News’s “This Week” that former President Donald J. Trump indeed played a role in an insurrection. Sununu also criticized his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. However, he stated his support for Trump remains due to the economy, border security, and “culture change”.

Although initially critical of Trump, Sununu’s stance switched from supporting Nikki Haley in the Republican primary. He announced in January that he would back Trump if he won the nomination.

He defended his support by criticizing President Biden’s inflating economy and border issues. Sununu suggested that Stephanopoulos, the interviewer, was disconnected from the public’s opinion if he thought voters would be influenced by concerns about democracy or felony convictions.

Sununu affirmed that he would stand by Trump despite his contributions to the insurrection. He argued that it is about displacing the current administration and addressing the inflation and border issues which he perceives to be affecting families across the country.

Despite the decrease in inflation from its peak in 2022, it was higher than expected as per a report released last week. Sununu emphasized the need for a “culture change”, a term he used multiple times without detailed explanation.

Despite Stephanopoulos’s push back, Sununu maintained he would support Trump even if convicted in criminal cases, stating “Me and 51 percent of America” would still back Trump.
