Texas Rep. Gina Hinojosa Sues Gov. Greg Abbott Over Allegedly Hidden Emails with Elon Musk

Texas Rep. Gina Hinojosa, a Democratic gubernatorial nominee, announced on Monday a lawsuit against Governor Greg Abbott over concealed emails between Abbott and Tesla CEO, Elon Musk.

Hinojosa, currently locked in a tight race against Abbott, stated that the lawsuit seeks undisclosed documents Abbott allegedly refused to release, branding them as private and potentially shameful.

Abbott’s spokesperson dismissed the lawsuit as groundless, accusing Hinojosa of using her political position for publicity. Musk has yet to comment.

Allegations in Hinojosa’s lawsuit include extensive ties between Abbott and Musk including frequent communication, public appearances, generous political donations, and mutual praise. Hinojosa also underscored Musk’s indirect financial contributions to Abbott and the millions granted to SpaceX for Texas operations.

Recently, Musk donated approximately $250 million to Republican groups, much of it influencing Texas elections.

Last month, Hinojosa requested all documents exchanged between Abbott and Musk’s companies, voicing concerns over tech giants’ rising influence in Texas. Her request followed the disclosure of nearly 1,400 pages of records by The Texas Newsroom, albeit most were redacted or entirely blacked out, as per 2025 reporting.

According to the lawsuit, Abbott’s office denied releasing unredacted versions of requested records. The lawsuit asserts that Abbott violated the law by denying Hinojosa access to the Abbott-Musk communications.

Attorney Cris Feldman alleged that Abbott’s office continues to obstruct Hinojosa’s attempts to review “intimate and embarrassing” emails. Hinojosa argues that she and the public are entitled to see the records for legislative purposes.
