Trump Declares He Would Not Approve Federal Abortion Ban

TL/DR –

Former President Donald Trump stated that he would not sign a federal abortion ban if one were to reach his desk, should he be elected again. Trump has been claiming credits for appointing Supreme Court justices who helped overturn Roe v. Wade while simultaneously distancing himself from the stricter efforts to limit abortion procedures by Republicans across the country. He believes the matter should be handled by individual states, and recently expressed disagreement with Arizona’s state Supreme Court decision to adhere to a law barring all abortions except in cases to save a pregnant person’s life.

Trump Says He Would Not Sign Federal Abortion Ban

According to CNN, Ex-President Donald Trump declared on Wednesday he would not endorse a federal abortion ban if elected in November.

This comment is Trump’s most assertive stance on a national abortion ban to date. He has jockeyed between taking credit for Supreme Court appointments that led to overturning Roe v. Wade and distancing himself from certain Republican efforts to limit the procedure. He advocated for state-led decision making on Monday.

When asked whether he would support a nationwide abortion ban if proposed by Congress, Trump firmly answered “No.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump disassociated himself from a controversial decision by Arizona’s state Supreme Court that demands the state adhere to a 160-year-old law permitting abortions only when necessary to save a pregnant person’s life. This ruling has roots in a case brought back to life after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022.

Upon being asked if Arizona had gone “too far” with this decision, Trump in Atlanta commented, “That’ll straighten out, I’m sure the governor and everyone else are going to bring it back into reason and that will be taken care of very quickly.”
