Trump Doesn’t Rule Out Seeking A Third Term Despite Constitutional Limit

TL/DR –

In an interview with NBC News, former President Donald Trump did not rule out the possibility of seeking a third term, despite the 22nd Amendment prohibiting this. He allegedly commented on methods in which this could be achieved, including a scenario where Vice President JD Vance could run for office and then pass the role to him. The comments follow a resolution crafted by Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., calling for the extension of presidential term limits.

Trump Considers Third Term in White House

Donald Trump hasn’t dismissed the idea of seeking a third term as US President, despite the 22nd Amendment prohibiting it. In a conversation with NBC News, Trump suggested there were ways to overcome this hurdle, adding he was “not joking”.

“A lot of people want me to do it,” Trump said. “But, I mean, we have a long way to go, it’s very early in the administration.” Trump seems focused on his current term, but hasn’t ruled out another.

When questioned about plans to seek a third term, Trump indicated there were “methods” to do so. One scenario proposed by NBC News involved Vice President JD Vance running for office and then passing the role to Trump, to which Trump responded, “that’s one” method.

Abolishing the two-term limit through constitutional amendment would be challenging and require a two-thirds vote of Congress or two-thirds of states calling for a constitutional convention. Afterward, ratification from three-quarters of states would be needed.

Trump has hinted previously at running for a third term, with Republicans viewing these comments as jokes. However, Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., drafted a resolution to extend presidential term limits, potentially allowing Trump another term.

Meanwhile, Trump ally Steve Bannon expressed his belief in an interview on News Nation that Trump will “run and win again in 2028”, suggesting there would be “alternatives” for Trump to seek a third term against the two-term maximum rule.

The White House promoted Trump’s comments linking himself to royalty, posting a manipulated magazine cover featuring Trump with a crown after the administration vetoed congestion pricing in New York City. The White House’s post on X quoted Trump’s previous comments on Truth Social: “LONG LIVE THE KING!”
