Trump’s Adviser Denies Plans to Invade Canada, Talks Budget Cuts, Panama Canal
TL/DR –
President Donald Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, has stated that Trump does not have any plans to invade Canada, despite reports of such intentions. Waltz has also commented on Trump’s plans to annex Greenland and regain control of the Panama Canal, as well as the President’s intentions to make budget cuts to agencies such as the Department of Defense and the Department of Education. Furthermore, based on his interview, Waltz didn’t directly answer if Elon Musk is the right person to identify funding cuts in the Defense Department but praised Musk’s company Space X.
Trump’s Administration Denies Plans to Invade Canada
Mike Waltz, President Trump’s national security adviser, assured on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the president holds no intention to invade Canada. This statement comes in response to reports of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s concerns about Trump’s intentions of making Canada the 51st state.
Waltz added that numerous Canadians disapprove Trudeau’s decade-long progressive governance. He emphasized the resurgence of American leadership from the Arctic to the Panama Canal under Trump’s administration.
Trump’s Plans for Greenland and Panama Canal
Prior to his second term inauguration, Trump voiced his ambition to annex Greenland and regain control of the Panama Canal. These intentions were also echoed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio during his Panama visit last week.
When questioned about his proposal to incorporate Canada as the 51st state during a Fox News interview, Trump affirmed it, arguing that such a move would financially benefit both nations.
Trump’s Upcoming Budget Cuts
Waltz touched on Trump’s significant cuts to federal agencies and alluded to further budget reductions, including the Defense Department. Trump intends to designate Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency, to identify wasteful expenditures at the Education and Defense Departments.
When asked about Musk’s suitability for this task, Waltz endorsed Musk’s company Space X and assured appropriate measures will be in place. In the same vein, Trump expressed trust in Musk during his Fox News interview.
Reductions in Aid and Conversations with Putin
Recently, Musk and DOGE have sought to reduce jobs and funding at USAID, a move Waltz defends as in line with the President’s vision. Waltz also denied that decreasing US humanitarian aid would yield control to China and Russia internationally.
Further, Waltz expressed Trump’s support for ending the war in Ukraine but refrained from commenting on the details of Trump’s call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He suggested that financial recoupment from Ukraine could be achieved through partnerships exploiting their natural resources.
