TL/DR –

Zohran Mamdani, a mayoral candidate going against Andrew Cuomo, has been widely criticized as unfit for the position by editorial boards of The New York Times and The New York Post. Despite these widespread criticisms and a pro-Cuomo super PAC spending millions on negative ads about him, Mamdani has been gaining significant momentum ahead of the June 24 primary. He has received an endorsement from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, has been backed by Representative Nydia Velázquez and Attorney General Letitia James, and has also garnered support from fellow candidates via a ranked-choice voting strategy.

As the mayoral primary draws near, Zohran Mamdani faces mounting opposition, including from Andrew Cuomo, to prevent him from securing the Democratic nomination.

The New York Times editorial board disapproved Mamdani as unfit for mayor, citing his lack of experience in running a government department or private organization.

While the board favored Cuomo over Mamdani, it expressed serious concerns over Cuomo’s ethics and conduct.

The New York Post editorial board also strongly opposed Mamdani’s campaign, labeling it a potential disaster for New York.

Despite criticism, Cuomo promoted his record and the rejection of Mamdani on social media.

Anti-Mamdani sentiment is also widespread on the airwaves, with Politico reporting that a pro-Cuomo super-PAC is investing $5.4m in negative ads against Mamdani.

Despite opposition, Mamdani’s popularity continues to rise ahead of the June 24 primary. He received endorsements from Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Attorney General Letitia James.

Mamdani has also garnered support from his fellow candidates through a ranked-choice voting strategy, receiving a joint endorsement with Michael Blake.

Mamdani responded to the Times’ critique during a press conference and stated that the election outcomes will be decided by close to a million New Yorkers.
