2nd District Debate Highlights Inflation, Abortion Issues
TL/DR –
The two candidates for the 2nd Congressional District race, Republican Joe Teirab and Democrat Angie Craig, debated for the second time in four days. Major topics of contention were inflation and abortion; Teirab criticized Craig for voting in favor of the Biden-Harris economic agenda while Craig defended her votes, including the Inflation Reduction Act, and criticized Teirab for his anti-abortion stance. The 2nd District is considered Minnesota’s most competitive congressional race, but outside special interests are not spending as much as they did in 2022, with just over $1 million dollars spent so far, mostly by Democratic interests supporting Craig.
2nd Congressional District Candidates Debate Over Inflation and Abortion
For the second time in four days, 2nd Congressional District race candidates had a debate focused on inflation and abortion issues.
Republican candidate Joe Teirab criticized reckless spending bills endorsed by the Biden-Harris administration, with inflation being his primary concern in his television ad.
At the Lakeville Chamber of Commerce-hosted debate, Teirab confronted Congresswoman Angie Craig for backing such spending bills that include the Inflation Reduction Act, which, despite not lowering inflation, reduced prescription drug prices for Medicare patients.
Craig defended her actions, arguing that the repeal of such an act would affect 2nd District seniors who rely on it for capped insulin prices. The debate, although primarily centered on economic and business issues, also dived into the contentious topic of abortion in response to a health care cost question.
Craig pointed out her opponent’s anti-abortion activism, to which Teirab admitted but defended passionately, citing his personal connection with a pregnancy resource center.
As the debate heated, Craig insisted on the right of every woman in America to make their own decision, a notion Teirab seemed skeptical of. Currently, both candidates are running television ads focusing on abortion and inflation, respectively.
Minnesota’s 2nd District is considered the state’s most competitive congressional race, with Craig narrowly winning her last three races. However, the Cook Political Report leans towards a Democratic favor.
Notably, outside special interests are investing less in the race than in 2022, with a significant reduction from $19 million to just over $1 million this year, largely supporting Craig, according to OpenSecrets.
