EPA Grants Historic 2M to Port of Oakland

The Port of Oakland has received a $322 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to expedite the conversion to zero-emissions cargo operations at the Oakland Seaport. This landmark funding, coupled with local partner investments, will lead to approximately half a billion dollars in total investments for green initiatives.

The grant is the largest-ever federal funding for a Bay Area program aimed at slashing emissions from seaport cargo operations. It will fund 663 pieces of zero-emissions equipment, including 475 drayage trucks and 188 pieces of cargo handling equipment.

Port of Oakland Board President Michael Colbruno shared, “The Clean Ports grant from the U.S. EPA is a major environmental win. This funding will massively contribute towards decarbonizing the Oakland supply chain and providing environmental and economic benefits for the region.”

The Port worked with multiple project partners and community groups to design a comprehensive program to achieve its zero-emissions targets more rapidly. The Port of Oakland, a sustainability leader, partners with different entities to enhance the environment and the economy. This funding will escalate the transition to zero-emission operations at the Oakland Seaport.

“The climate crisis demands urgent action to protect our communities,” U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Lee said. “This investment will protect Oakland from the damaging effects of fossil fuels and expedite the shift toward a zero-emissions future.”

U.S. Senator Alex Padilla added, “This historic investment of over $320 million in the Port of Oakland is a monumental step forward in accelerating the zero-emission infrastructure transition, and thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, we’re decarbonizing our supply chain.”

The funding is part of the U.S. EPA Clean Ports Program: Zero-Emission Technology Deployment Competition, authorized under the federal Inflation Reduction Act. This initiative aligns with various environmental plans like the California Air Resources Board’s Priority Climate Action Plan, the AB 617 West Oakland Community Action Plan, and the Port’s Seaport Air Quality 2020 and Beyond Plan.
