FAA FAST Grant of $4.1M Awarded to Heart Aerospace
TL/DR –
Swedish hybrid-electric airplane maker Heart Aerospace has received a $4.1 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Fuelling Aviation’s Sustainable Transition program to develop a management system for its hybrid propulsion system. The funding will be used for the development of the Hybrid Propulsion Automated Control System, which is designed to automate hybrid power sources in order to reduce fuel burn, emissions, and noise. Heart Aerospace is currently developing the ES-30, a cost-effective, environmentally friendly hybrid electric regional aircraft under the FAST Grant Program, which has allocated $244.5 million in grants to Sustainable Aviation Fuel projects and $46.5 million for new aviation technologies.
Swedish Firm Selected for Aviation Sustainability Grant
Swedish hybrid-electric airplane manufacturer, Heart Aerospace, is set to receive a $4.1 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Fuelling Aviation’s Sustainable Transition (FAST) program. This funding is allocated for the creation of a management system for their ground-breaking hybrid propulsion system.
This project will take place in the United States, further expanding Heart’s presence in the country. The work will be centred around their newly established R&D hub in Los Angeles.
The grant will facilitate the development of the Hybrid Propulsion Automated Control System (HPACS). This innovative technology will introduce an aircraft-level power management system that will automatically control hybrid power sources. The primary objectives of this system are to ensure safety, minimize fuel consumption, emissions, and noise, and remain unobtrusive to the flight crew.
Developing the ES-30 Regional Aircraft
Heart Aerospace is currently engineering the ES-30, an eco-friendly hybrid electric regional aircraft. This cost-effective solution aims to democratize regional air travel, facilitating the reopening of discontinued U.S. regional air routes.
The FAST Grant Program, funded by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, intends to expedite the development and adoption of sustainable aviation technologies in the U.S.
The FAA’s FAST Grant scheme has already earmarked $244.5 million in grants for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) projects and an additional $46.5 million in grants for new aviation technologies. This Federal investment is a crucial initial step towards the scale-up of technology and SAF in the U.S., signifying a promising shift towards technology as a tool for carbon reduction.
