Funded by the Inflation Reduction Act, a key part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has announced a contract awarded to Hammer LGC. Hammer LGC, a Native American and Service Disabled Veteran-owned Small Business in Samson, Alabama, will undertake paving repairs at the Frank M. Scarlett Federal Building in Brunswick, GA using a $619,256 award.
The project encompasses repaving around 45,000 square feet of parking areas with over 1,000 U.S. tons of low embodied carbon asphalt, hitting GSA’s most stringent “Top 20%” global warming potential limits. Jason Shelton, Regional Administrator for GSA’s Southeast Sunbelt Region, emphasizes the project’s focus on facility improvements, sustainable building materials, and small business investment.
Utilizing funds from the Inflation Reduction Act, the U.S.’s largest climate investment, low-embodied carbon materials with reduced greenhouse gas emissions will be employed. The Frank M. Scarlett Federal Building project is one of over 150 low embodied carbon material projects in 39 states that the GSA announced in November 2023. Completion is expected by summer 2025.
This announcement reinforces the Biden-Harris Administration’s Federal Buy Clean Initiative, prioritizing the purchase of low-embodied carbon asphalt, concrete, glass, and steel with lower greenhouse gas emissions. Funding from the Inflation Reduction Act, reaching nearly $3.4 billion, allows the GSA to build more sustainable, cost-efficient high-performance facilities, with $2.15 billion specifically targeting low embodied carbon construction materials. These projects aim to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions by 2.3 million metric tons.
The project aligns with President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, dedicated to economic growth, infrastructure modernization, manufacturing growth, and a clean-energy economy to address climate change and boost community resilience.
