Educational Personal Finance Simulation Program Introduced to West Virginia Middle School Students

In Bridgeport, West Virginia, middle schoolers recently had a unique opportunity to get a taste of real-world responsibilities and the value of money.

Understanding Adult Financial Responsibilities Through Simulation

The West Virginia State Treasurer’s Office brought the innovative and educational ‘Get a Life Personal Finance Simulation’ to Liberty Middle School. This program aims to provide students with practical insights into managing personal finances and the importance of making informed financial decisions.

Learning Financial Management Through Role-Play

Students were assigned different roles, complete with an income and various life situations, in the simulation. They were tasked with managing a minimum wage income in the first round, making necessary purchases such as groceries, utilities, gas, and insurance.

Understanding the Value of Higher Education and Income

In the second-round simulation, students experienced managing a higher income, illustrating the potential benefits of obtaining higher education, such as a technical certification or a 4-year college degree.

Teaching Students Vital Life Skills

The organizers of the simulation, including Dr. Geraldine Beckett, CTE Liaison Specialist for Harrison County Schools, emphasized the importance of these lessons. They hope students would gain a new perspective on money management, understanding its value and significance in everyday life.

Community Involvement in the Learning Process

The Harrison County Chamber of Commerce and the WVU Extension Service contributed to this learning experience by providing volunteers to serve as vendors in the simulation. This participation from local entities further ensures the simulation’s practicality and real-world relevance.
