Patelco Credit Union Launches Financial Literacy Pilot Program in California Schools
Patelco Credit Union Collaborates with Local High Schools for New Personal Finance Program

Patelco’s Innovative Financial Literacy Initiative
Patelco Credit Union, in partnership with Castlemont High School in Oakland and Westmoor High School in Daly City, is pioneering an impactful finance education program in line with California’s new state curriculum requirements.
The novel initiative will provide personal finance instruction, preparing students for real-world financial responsibilities and fulfilling the new California state legislation requirements for the 2027-28 school year.
Meeting Assembly Bill 2927 Requirements
This groundbreaking program allows participating schools to meet the demands of Assembly Bill 2927, a landmark financial literacy legislation in California. The legislation stipulates that from the 2027-28 academic year onward, all state high schools must offer a standalone personal finance course, with finance education becoming a graduation prerequisite by 2031.
Patelco’s Mission and Impact
Patelco Credit Union’s CEO, Erin Mendez, expressed that this program aligns perfectly with Patelco’s long-standing mission to empower members through financial literacy and financial wellbeing. Patelco’s initiative will foster financially resilient individuals, families, and communities through a sustainable curriculum that schools can incorporate long-term.
Patelco’s Financial Wellness for Schools Initiative
The Patelco Financial Wellness for Schools Initiative aims to help schools implement California’s financial literacy requirement. The program offers modular learning experiences, enabling each school to design a curriculum that meets their specific needs and aligns with the California Personal Finance Curriculum Guide. The guide provides strategies to strengthen financial literacy outcomes, such as real-world simulations, financial literacy events, guest speakers, internships, and workforce development opportunities.
Patelco’s program will cover key areas such as banking, budgeting, employment and income, credit management, loans, taxes, investing, fraud prevention, behavioral finance, charitable giving, and college financing.
