Refrain from Labeling Trump Supporters as ‘Stupid’

37

TL/DR –

The article emphasizes that name-calling and insulting someone is not an effective way to win them over or communicate with them effectively, particularly in relation to political debates. It questions when and where those who are supportive of MAGA are being asked to consider the feelings of others and not insult or name-call. The writer has expressed frustration over the perceived hypocrisy, arguing that people on their side of the political debate are constantly asked to moderate their behavior and avoid insults, while they see no such self-moderation from the other side.

Dealing with Disrespect: Name-Calling and Insults in Political Discourse

Respecting others is a fundamental principle, yet in political discourse, it often seems to be ignored. Many believe the only way to win electorally is to communicate our ideas respectfully, especially to make our arguments appealing to MAGA supporters.

This notion somewhat holds water. No one aims to hurt feelings or insult. But a glaring question arises: when are they asked to respect our feelings? When are they advised not to insult or call us names? It appears there’s a lack of moderation in their behavior.

The supporters who partake in promoting slogans such as “FJB”, “Let’s Go Brandon”, or stickers displaying Joe Biden tied and bound in the back of a truck, are not moderating at all. Apologies for such acts? Unheard of.

These supporters claim their voting choices are driven by economic concerns, however, their true issues seem to be rooted in intolerance and bigotry. Are we not allowed to reciprocate their hostility?

Addressing Economic and Immigration Issues

The economy and immigration are the primary topics voters express concern over. Many have questioned whether the economy could have been better. The reality is, the Biden administration accomplished an impressive recovery from COVID-19, creating jobs in various sectors, investing in America’s infrastructure, and fostering economic growth.

Despite these efforts, communicating this success convincingly has been a challenge. Meanwhile, GOP can confidently promote policies like Austerity and Tax Cuts for the Rich, despite contradicting evidence, without hesitation. There seems to be a struggle in making people believe the reality happening before their eyes.

The Biden-led economy was impressively robust on many fronts. The GDP and unemployment rates were good, and the deficit was reduced by $1.3 Trillion. The issue of inflation, which affected dozens of countries post-COVID, was not Biden’s fault. Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, inflation dropped from 9% to 2.4% within a year. In terms of vaccine distribution and economic recovery, Biden outperformed any other post-recession period.

Immigration isn’t entirely in the President’s control. It involves a due process where people seeking asylum at the border are either accepted or rejected. Prices typically don’t decrease unless we’re in a recession. Unrealistic expectations are bound to lead to dissatisfaction.

Addressing Cognitive Dissonance Among MAGA Supporters

Cognitive issues among some MAGA supporters and Biden’s decision to not step down early, thus shortening Kamala’s campaign, have posed challenges. However, the bigger issue is the denial ridden belief systems among most MAGA supporters.

Claiming stupidity isn’t about convincing anyone. It’s about recognizing decades of spin and disinformation. Informed decisions about media consumption matter. When people support harmful policies, they’re either ignorant of the damage caused or deliberately causing it. It’s a civic duty to pay attention. Failure to do so warrants no sympathy or empathy.

If they expect respect, they need to earn it.

If someone is able to admit they made an honest mistake, reaching out to them becomes easier; for the rest, it’s a fruitless endeavor.
