Seattle Port Denounces Federal Climate Rollbacks in New Bill
TL/DR –
The Port of Seattle has expressed concern over the recent passage of H.R. 1, known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”, which cuts major clean energy and environmental funding programmes. The legislation eliminates a range of clean energy tax credits including those for commercial electric vehicles, alternative fuels, EV charging infrastructure, and energy-efficient building upgrades. This, according to port officials, undermines the agency’s ability to meet climate goals and transition heavy-duty diesel trucks to electric or low-emission alternatives.
The Port of Seattle Reacts to Clean Energy Rollbacks
The Port of Seattle expresses concern following the approval of H.R. 1, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” on July 3, which repeals major clean energy and environmental funding programs essential for their decarbonization initiatives.
The new law abolishes various clean energy tax benefits, including those targeted towards commercial electric vehicles, alternative fuels, EV charging facilities, and energy-saving building renovations.
This legislative move undermines the Port’s capacity to achieve its environmental objectives, according to Port authorities.
Commission President Toshiko Hasegawa stated, “The bill’s enactment makes our local fight against climate change more challenging. These credits were instrumental in greening our fleet and boosting green infrastructure investments. Despite this setback, we remain dedicated to our goals.”
The legislation also revokes EPA funding established under the Inflation Reduction Act, including grants that the Port leverages to facilitate the transition of heavy-duty diesel trucks to electric or low-emission alternatives.
“The bill’s removal of incentives for electrification and clean fuels is hugely detrimental to both the Port’s and the nation’s capacity to fight climate change and foster future job growth,” stated Commissioner Fred Felleman.
Despite its objections, the Port recognized some positive aspects of the law, such as investments in air traffic control, airport security, and Coast Guard operations that benefit Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and maritime infrastructure.
The Port pledges to continue collaborating with Washington’s congressional delegation in advocating for sustainable policies that safeguard air quality, public health, and long-term economic progress.
