‘Sessions and McClain to Debate Democrats’ IRS Expansion Impact’



The Subcommittees on Government Operations and the Federal Workforce, and Health Care and Financial Services, are holding a joint hearing titled “Oversight of the Internal Revenue Service.” The focus will be on how IRS plans to utilize increased funding from the Inflation Reduction Act, and to discuss IRS policies on enforcement, customer service, and taxpayer data protection. The hearing, scheduled for October 24, 2023, will be open to the public and the press, and will feature witnesses including the Commissioner of the IRS and the Director of Strategic Issues at the Government Accountability Office.

Subcommittee Exploring IRS Use of Expanded Funding

In a joint subcommittee hearing dubbed “Oversight of the Internal Revenue Service“, Chairman Pete Sessions of the Government Operations and Federal Workforce Subcommittee and Chairwoman Lisa McClain of the Health Care and Financial Services Subcommittee, have announced plans to scrutinize IRS’s use of additional funds provided by the Inflation Reduction Act. Topics of discussion include enforcement policies, customer service, and taxpayer data protection.

Sessions and McClain expressed their commitment to ensuring taxpayer protection against a potentially weaponized IRS, improving customer service, addressing backlog, and stopping any political bias. They voiced concerns about the IRS’s budget being enhanced to fund unrestrained spending and reiterated their intent to prevent the middle-class and hardworking Americans from being targeted.

The “Oversight of the Internal Revenue Service” hearing is scheduled on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at 2:00 PM ET. Witness testimonies will be taken at the 2157 Rayburn House Office Building. Witnesses set to testify include The Honorable Danny Werfel, Commissioner of Internal Revenue Service and Jessica Lucas-Judy, Director of Strategic Issues at the Government Accountability Office.
