Last year, nearly 974,000 fresh graduates aged 20 to 24 found employment opportunities in small businesses with 1 to 49 employees, according to a Gusto report. This is a slight increase from the previous year, though the hiring market has yet to recover fully from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Interestingly, while industry giants are incorporating more AI into their workforce, small businesses are welcoming fresh graduates with open arms. These young workers are bringing in innovative, tech-savvy, and relationship-building skills that are highly valued in today’s business landscape. Building on this trend, business mogul Mark Cuban advises recent graduates to explore the myriad opportunities offered by small businesses.

New Grad Hiring Trends: Embracing AI and Changing Career Tracks

The job roles that small businesses are eager to fill have evolved significantly. Traditional roles like financial analysts, software engineers, and research associates have seen a decline in popularity. In contrast, AI-focused roles and hands-on positions are on the rise for young professionals.

Careers such as AI engineers and founding engineers have seen the most significant growth. Simultaneously, jobs that are perceived as AI-proof, such as field managers and service technicians, are also topping the charts. This presents an interesting dichotomy in Gen Z’s labour market: those leaning into tech, and those establishing their mark in the physical trades.

Blue-Collar Resurgence Amidst the AI Revolution

While younger generations are often advised to embrace AI for career success, many are also exploring trade jobs. A 2024 Harris Poll survey revealed that 78% of Americans noticed an increasing interest in trade jobs among young adults.

Meanwhile, tech roles, particularly AI engineering, are experiencing a resurgence. According to a LinkedIn analysis, ‘AI engineer’ was the fastest-growing job title for young workers in 2026. Enterprise AI platform PromptQL even offered $900 hourly wages to its AI engineers, a testament to the value of AI skills in the modern job market.

Aaron Terrazas, an economist at Gusto, believes this trend reflects the urgent need for young people who are native to AI. He says, “The graduating class of 2026 is the first college cohort to complete its entire higher education in the AI era, making them incredibly valuable for businesses looking to quickly modernize.”
