The Local Energy Alliance Program Boosts Solar Energy Adoption in Virginia

The Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) has accelerated solar energy transition for over 1,500 Virginia homeowners via its Solarize Virginia program. Now in its 11th year, the initiative partners with municipalities across the Commonwealth to offer financial incentives and expert guidance on clean energy transition.

This year’s Solarize Virginia campaign, running from April 15 to July 15, provides residents with free solar satellite assessments, competitive pricing, vetted installers and support in acquiring federal and state incentives, including a 30% federal tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act.

Prince William County is partaking in Solarize Virginia to offer its residents a free access to affordable solar energy and to simplify the installation process, according to Giulia Manno, Director of the Prince William County Office of Sustainability. She emphasizes its effectiveness for reducing electricity bills and increasing access to clean energy.

LEAP Solar Program Manager, Deborah Arenstein, acknowledges the complexities of transitioning to solar energy and expresses the program’s aim to simplify the process and facilitate Virginia residents’ transition to solar power.

Since 2014, Solarize Virginia has empowered homeowners to save money by educating them about the benefits of solar energy and offering free solar satellite assessments, reducing their reliance on traditional energy sources.

Prince William County is participating in the Solarize program for the third year. Manno noted that the county saw significant solar capacity growth as installations doubled between 2022 and 2023. They became the largest locality in Virginia to launch Solar App+ (Solar Automated Permit Processing Plus) in 2024, and anticipate this streamlined permitting and installation process to boost residential solar adoption further.

Interested homeowners and businesses can sign up for a free Solarize Virginia solar satellite assessment through July 15 at solarizeva.org. LEAP’s ongoing support assists homeowners throughout the entire process of transitioning to solar energy, from initial consultation to installation.
