Stacey Abrams approves $1.9B for new home decarbonization committee
TL/DR –
Under the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was directed by Congress to fund organizations that offer loans to support the transition to clean energy across the U.S. As part of this initiative, Power Forward Communities, a coalition of five organizations, received $2 billion from the EPA to focus on decarbonizing housing. The Trump administration later froze these funds and demanded investigations by the FBI, the Justice Department and the EPA’s inspector general; however, a veteran federal prosecutor concluded there was not sufficient evidence to launch a grand jury criminal inquiry.
Clarification on President Trump’s Statement
The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act gave the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the authority to fund organizations that would provide loans to businesses and homeowners for clean energy transitions, especially in low-income neighborhoods. As part of this scheme, the EPA allotted $2 billion to Power Forward Communities, a coalition of five organizations aiming to decarbonize housing.
One of the participant groups, Rewiring America, was due to receive part of these funds. Notably, Ms. Abrams, a Democratic organizer and ex-gubernatorial candidate in Georgia, had a one-year term as a senior counselor for Rewiring America – she did not run the organization. Despite this, the Trump administration has halted the funding and called for probes by the FBI, Justice Department, and the EPA’s inspector general. Ironically, a seasoned federal prosecutor was asked to step down after concluding that there was insufficient evidence to start a grand jury criminal inquiry.
