Trump: Sherill Will ‘Double Energy Bills,’ Backs Ciattarelli for NJ
TL/DR –
Donald Trump has urged voters to reject Democratic Representative Mikie Sherrill’s energy policy in the upcoming New Jersey governor race against Republican Jack Ciattarelli. As early voting begins and energy bills rise, Trump claimed Sherrill’s policies would increase prices, while Ciattarelli would cut them in half. Both Sherrill and Ciattarelli have made energy prices a campaign focus, pledging to reduce utility costs if elected.
Trump Criticizes Mikie Sherrill’s Energy Policy as Early Voting Commences in New Jersey Governor Race
As early voting kickstarts in the New Jersey Governor race, former U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a warning to voters regarding Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ). According to Trump, Sherrill’s energy policy is “fake and corrupt” and would result in higher energy costs for New Jersey residents. The warning arrived amidst a contest against Republican Jack Ciattarelli for the position of the next governor of New Jersey.
With energy bills escalating, the cost of electricity is a central issue in the 2025 elections as the voting day, Nov. 4, nears. The early voting period began this past Saturday.
During a telephone rally that Trump hosted to support Ciattarelli, he stated, “Mikie Sherrill looks [like] such an innocent name, but her energy policies would send your prices soaring and make New Jersey even more expensive than it already is.” Trump further showed his support for Ciattarelli and confidently assured that Ciattarelli is “going to cut your energy bills in half,” as reported by the Associated Press.
Democrats have initiated a shift towards energy-centric messaging after Trump campaigned to reduce energy prices last year. However, despite Trump’s promises, the cost of electricity has continued to climb for most Americans. Both Sherrill and Ciattarelli have reoriented their focus towards electricity bills, which are at the forefront of voters’ concerns in New Jersey.
In her first TV ad of the general election, Sherrill expressed, “Day One as governor, I’m declaring a state of emergency on utility costs using emergency powers to end these rate hikes and drive down your bills.” On the other hand, Ciattarelli has promised to “lower electricity bills” and has attempted to associate Sherrill with the current Democratic governor’s stance on electricity costs.
According to the recent Rutgers University Eagleton poll, Sherrill is leading Ciattarelli by five points. The poll also indicated that Trump’s influence is significant in this race, given his increased popularity in the traditionally Democratic state last year.
Democrats have emphasized the GOP’s rigorous approach to phasing out clean energy tax credits from former President Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, following Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. This act led to reductions in entitlement programs, including Medicaid.
As reported by Data for Progress, a left-wing think tank, 60% of voters have seen an increase in their electric bills compared to last year. Furthermore, a PowerLines poll conducted with Ipsos shows that rising utility bills worry three out of four Americans, irrespective of their political alignment. The Energy Information Administration anticipates that average residential electricity prices in the U.S. will escalate from $0.1648 per kilowatt-hour in 2024 to approximately $0.1790 per kilowatt-hour next year.
