Trump’s EPA Aims at Environmental Justice Initiatives – Planet Detroit

115

TL/DR –

The Trump administration has put nearly 170 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) employees on leave and frozen billions in climate and environmental justice grants. The decision has delayed pollution monitoring, clean energy adoption, and community resilience efforts, particularly in low-income and minority communities. The future of environmental justice protections remains uncertain despite some grant funding being restored.

Trump Administration Rolls Back EPA Protections

The Trump administration has enforced a sweeping rollback, placing nearly 170 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) employees on administrative leave and freezing billions in climate and environmental justice grants. This move has disrupted critical projects that address pollution and climate resilience in low-income and minority communities.

The Inflation Reduction Act’s Environmental and Climate Justice Community Change Grants, allocating $81.7 million to Michigan alone, were restricted. This restriction has caused delays in grant recipients accessing funding. The Solar For All initiative, aiming to deliver solar energy to almost 900,000 households, has also been affected.

Zealan Hoover, former EPA senior advisor, indicates that some grant funding has been restored. However, the long-term viability of environmental justice programs remains precarious due to potential future targeting by the Trump administration.

Partial Reinstatement of Funds

Hoover reported on a BlueSky post that some paused grant awards are being released, with a warning of potential further targeting by the Trump administration. The freeze impacted a broad range of initiatives including clean transportation, pollution reduction, and community resilience projects. In Michigan, 43 environmental justice projects were affected, accounting for $461.2 million in stalled funding.

Jeremy Orr, former EPA’s National Environmental Justice Advisory Council (NEJAC) member, stated that this is a significant shift from the Trump administration’s previous stance which, while not supporting, did not actively dismantle these efforts.

Growth of Environmental Justice under Biden

The Biden administration prioritized environmental justice more than any previous administration, leading to historic funding for environmental justice initiatives such as clean energy adoption, pollution monitoring, and resilience projects. Biden’s policies directed unprecedented investment into environmental justice initiatives.

Health and Environmental Rollbacks

Public health experts warn that rolling back these protections will exacerbate rates of respiratory and cardiovascular disease in frontline communities. According to Lisa DelBuono, executive director of Michigan Clinicians for Climate Action, dismantling the EPA’s Office of Environmental Justice is an act of racism against principles most Americans uphold.

Uncertain Future for Environmental Justice Protections

The Trump administration has, thus far, remained unclear about the future of the OEJECR and previously approved grants. The funding freeze has disrupted local projects, including the resilience hub project – a local initiative in Detroit designed to provide safe spaces for residents during power outages and heatwaves.

Community leaders and lawmakers are committed to fighting these cuts, but the long-term viability of environmental justice protections remains uncertain.
