TL/DR –

The Humane Society of Huron Valley in Ann Arbor rehomed ten chickens within 24 hours of a Facebook post advertising their availability. These chickens, some of whom are no longer able to lay eggs, were originally owned by a person in Webster Township who was unable to continue caring for them. Interested families filled out applications, were evaluated for their ability to provide suitable living conditions, and were enabled to meet the chickens before adoption.

Local Chickens Find Forever Homes Fast

Several local chickens have swiftly found their forever homes this week. The Humane Society of Huron Valley, based in Ann Arbor, received 10 chickens and quickly helped them find new homes thanks to a widely-shared Facebook post.

Adoptions Manager Ashley Jackson expressed surprise at the response, stating they’d never received so many phone calls about adopting chickens. These 10 chickens, received on Feb. 12 from a previous owner in Webster Township, were all adopted within 24 hours of being listed.

The adoption process required families to fill out an application and meet with the chickens. The Humane Society staff ensured all potential adopters could provide adequate care and housing for the birds. Here’s the shared post.

All chickens underwent medical exams to confirm their good health before making them available for adoption. Although some of these four-year-old chickens no longer lay eggs, they were adopted to enjoy safe living spaces, not for egg production.

Post-listing, all chickens found homes on the same day. The response heartened the Humane Society staff, who thanked everyone who spread the word about the chickens.

The adopting families, who are already experienced in caring for chickens, received guidance on their care, although the Humane Society cannot verify the post-adoption living conditions.

The Facebook post also indicated the potential arrival of 10 more chickens. The current status of these birds is uncertain as the staff is focusing on rehoming rather than sheltering them.

Interested in adopting? Ashley Jackson encourages community members to contact the Humane Society of Huron Valley for information on other animals awaiting adoption.
