Officials reported that 43-year-old William Aaron Burke was pronounced dead at the scene following the vehicle collision.

Sgt. Robert Baker of the N.C. State Highway Patrol recounted that around 12:41 p.m., a Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Burke collided with a small white Subaru SUV in the right-hand lane. Both vehicles lost control, subsequently hitting a tractor-trailer before coming to rest on the right shoulder. The tractor-trailer driver was able to pull off safely to the right, and no other injuries were reported in the accident.

The crash details, including the exact point of impact between the Hyundai and the Subaru, are still under investigation. Post-crash, the North Carolina Department of Transportation issued an alert at 12:56 p.m., warning that the road was closed at Exit 44 (US-19) and traffic was backed up for at least four miles.
