A 37-year-old Pensacola man sustained severe injuries after his vehicle plunged into Bayou Chico Creek in Escambia County, Florida, on Sunday night. The accident happened near the intersection of US 98 (SR 30) and SR 295, Navy Boulevard, around 9 p.m.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the man was speeding in the wrong direction on US 98 in a white Mercedes sedan. His vehicle ran a red light, traversed through the Murphy’s Express parking lot, struck a concrete parking bollard, crashed through a chain-link fence, and finally ended up on the SW Greenway boardwalk before plunging into Bayou Chico Creek. The vehicle became fully submerged in the water.
Two Navy sailors from the nearby Naval Air Station Pensacola witnessed the event and promptly offered their assistance. One of the sailors bravely dived into the water, heard the victim knocking on the car windows, and broke through the sunroof to rescue the driver trapped inside the submerged vehicle. The two sailors pulled the victim to shore, providing first aid until Escambia County EMS arrived on the scene.
The brave sailor who dived into the water was treated at a local hospital for injuries sustained during the rescue effort. The FHP stated that the driver suffered a medical emergency leading up to the crash. He was subsequently transported to Baptist Hospital, with his injuries classified as non-life-threatening.
