The fatal shooting unfolded on Galway Drive during a US Marshals Service fugitive task force operation to serve a warrant for firearm possession by a convicted felon. During the operation, the officers received additional gunfire from inside the residence, resulting in the death of three marshals task force members. The identities of the deceased officers were confirmed as Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott, both 14-year veterans of the state’s Department of Adult Correction.

Four Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers were also shot in the incident, including Officer Joshua Eyer, who later succumbed to his injuries. Eyer, a 6-year veteran with the CMPD, is survived by his wife and 3-year-old son. Jennings expressed his gratitude for Eyer’s bravery and sacrifice for the community.
