Wake County Commissioners have voted to commit $7 million to promote community outreach programs for vulnerable residents. The approved projects, targeted at improving housing, food security, and other critical services, are supported through the county’s Impact Fund and Community Capital Program.

The Impact Fund, which represents $330,000 of the total amount, is allocated to projects proposed by smaller nonprofits. These nonprofits have 25 or fewer employees and annual incomes under $2.5 million. The following Impact Fund projects have received approval:

  • A Place at the Table – $120,600 to initiate a food truck for free healthy meals to after-school programs and shelters. 75% of the food truck’s usual business will subsidize these meals.
  • The White Oak Foundation – $173,100 to construct two traditional housing units supporting low-income families and veterans in Cary and Apex area.
  • The Women’s Center of Wake County – $36,600 to transform an existing location into a “Safe Haven” overnight shelter by fitting modular beds and storage units.

The remaining nine projects, worth over $6.6 million, are funded through the Community Capital Program. These ABC funds are reserved to construct new facilities and renovate or expand existing ones. The approved Community Capital projects include:

  • Fertile Ground Food Cooperative – $1 million to establish a community-owned grocery store in Southeast Raleigh, providing healthy food and living wage jobs.
