Temporary Housing Solution for Homeless in Grand Rapids

A new project offering temporary housing for homeless residents is underway in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Investment firm Eenhoorn LLC has partnered with nonprofit Community Rebuilders to repurpose a former retirement home on Fulton Street East.

“Our goal is to help those who can’t afford rent,” says Paul Heule, CEO of Eenhoorn. Each apartment will feature a kitchenette, bathroom, and ample space for living and sleeping. This project is seen as a crucial step toward battling the housing crisis in Kent County.

“We aim to address affordable housing needs for our most vulnerable populations,” adds Vera Beech, Executive Director of Community Rebuilders. The temporary, affordable housing aims to help people get back on their feet and start rebuilding their lives.

According to a 2023 point-in-time count, 1,239 people are homeless in Kent County, an increase from 723 in 2018. “The shortage of affordable housing options makes it difficult for low-income individuals to access the rental market,” Beech shares.

The new temporary housing solution will be located at 1450 E Fulton Street in Grand Rapids and is expected to be operational by Fall.
