Century-old Stocking Elementary Shuts Down

TL/DR –

Stocking Elementary in Grand Rapids, Michigan is closing down after 100 years of operation, with the building’s future currently undecided. The closure is due to a number of reasons including the school’s small size, lack of air conditioning, and the presence of nearby schools that can better provide for students’ educational needs, said Principal Michael Thomasma. Past students, staff, and community members were invited to a farewell celebration and given the chance to provide feedback on what they think should happen to the building.

End of an Era for Stocking Elementary as School Closes

Stocking Elementary, a century-old school in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is closing its doors this week, marking a significant milestone for the local community.

“I have been here since preschool; I will truly miss this school,” expressed a devoted Stocking Elementary student. Another student shared mixed feelings, noting the excitement of attending a new school while cherishing the memories at Stocking Elementary.

The school held farewell celebrations on Tuesday, inviting community members to share their memories of Stocking Elementary and participate in self-guided tours. Attendees were also asked to provide feedback about the potential future use of the historic building.

Principal Michael Thomasma explained the reasons for the closure, stating, “There are schools around us that can absorb our students and offer them optimal education opportunities. We are a smaller school without air conditioning, and we have building needs better served by Sibley and Harrison.”

Stocking Elementary had previously closed in 2010 before reopening a few years later. However, not all community members support the new closure. Kathi Traylor, a Stocking Elementary grandparent, expressed dissatisfaction, praising the school’s staff and lamenting the loss of this community asset.

The farewell event incorporated a performance of “America The Beautiful,” a song played during the school’s opening in 1924. Principal Thomasma revealed that the school’s future is still uncertain, stating, “There are a few developers interested in the building, but nothing is written in stone yet.”
