A Kidnapping Suspect Taken Into Custody After Bizarre Standoffs

In Paramount and Compton, California, a kidnapping suspect was arrested after causing extensive traffic jams during two unusual standoffs.

The suspect on the run was finally surrounded by California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers on the westbound 91 Freeway in Compton. He was pulled out of his van at around 7:50 p.m.

The man held out for over an hour, with his van trapped between patrol officers and the freeway wall, refusing to surrender.

Prior to this, CHP officers rammed his van following a short pursuit on a deflated tire along the 91 Freeway. Officers fired less-than-lethal rounds, shattering the van’s windows.

Despite the traffic backup on the westbound 91, the suspect used a tire and cardboard to cover his shattered passenger window, blocking the view inside the van.

Although there seemed to be some communication between the suspect and officers during the standoff, it wasn’t until officers approached the van from both sides and physically removed him that the standoff ended.

Initially, the suspect, accused of kidnapping a woman, led authorities on a high-speed chase ending in a standoff in Paramount on the 710 Freeway, causing the southbound 710 to close just before 5 p.m.
