California Congresswoman Julia Brownley (CA-26) recently held a press conference in Camarillo, CA where she called on Republicans to conclude the government shutdown. Brownley urged the protection of affordable health care for millions of Americans, stressing that the ongoing shutdown and Republican health care policies are causing a negative impact on families in Ventura County and across the country.
“Health care must be affordable and accessible for all Americans,” Brownley asserted. She emphasized the risk millions currently face concerning their coverage due to the Republicans’ aggressive assault on the health care system and their continued refusal to end the shutdown.
Brownley criticized Republicans, who control the House, Senate, and the White House, for holding the government hostage instead of resolving the health care crisis they’ve created. She pointed out that while House Republicans are enjoying a fully paid vacation, federal workers are without pay and families are unsure about affording their next doctor’s visit.
Dr. Felix Nuñez, CEO of Gold Coast Health Plan, stated, “Healthcare is a basic human right for everyone, irrespective of their economic status.” Gold Coast Health Plan, which serves over 240,000 Med-Cal members throughout Ventura County, believes that no one should be forced to choose between their health and daily life necessities.
“The ongoing shutdown affects everyone – from federal workers to contractors to local economies,” added Ventura County Supervisor Vianey Lopez. She also acknowledged the pivotal role of Medi-Cal in the community’s health and how the current administration’s actions affect everyone, not just benefit recipients.
More than 217,000 residents in California’s 26th Congressional District rely on Medicaid. An estimated 34,000 could lose their coverage under H.R. 1, the House Republican plan that would cut Medicaid and other crucial health care programs. Brownley concluded by reaffirming her commitment to her constituents, vowing to continue fighting for their healthcare and economic security.
