Covid-19 Vaccine Still Recommended for Children, Says CDC’s Revised Schedule

TL/DR –

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is still recommending COVID-19 vaccinations for healthy children, despite an earlier announcement from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. that the U.S would stop recommending routine COVID-19 vaccines for healthy children and pregnant women. The new guidance allows parents to choose whether to vaccinate a child for COVID-19, informed by the clinical judgment of a healthcare provider and personal circumstances. Andrew Nixon, a spokesperson for the Health and Human Services department, encouraged individuals to consult with their healthcare provider on any medical decisions.

CDC Maintains Covid-19 Vaccination Recommendation for Children Despite New Guidance

Despite new guidance, the Covid-19 vaccine remains on the CDC’s revised schedule of childhood vaccinations. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently announced the government’s decision to stop recommending routine Covid-19 vaccines for healthy children and pregnant women.

However, the CDC maintains its recommendation for healthy children to receive the Covid-19 vaccine in accordance with its latest immunization schedule. Following a video statement by Kennedy Jr., FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, and NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya, stating the removal of Covid-19 vaccines from the CDC’s recommended schedule, healthy children are still advised to receive their shots.

Despite the new policy changes, CDC’s previous recommendations for those aged six months and older to receive Covid-19 vaccines remain unchanged. The agency continues to urge individuals to consult their health care providers regarding any medical decisions. “The CDC and HHS encourage individuals to talk with their healthcare provider on any medical decisions,” HHS spokesman Andrew Nixon stated in an email to the Washington Post.

Parents who wish to vaccinate their children or pregnant women desiring to get vaccinated are advised to base their decisions on informed consent and the clinical judgement of their healthcare provider. More information about the Covid-19 vaccines for children and pregnant women can be found here.

The new guidance has prompted a series of discussions about the cost of a Covid-19 vaccine which could potentially increase to $200. More details about this development are available here. A new Covid-19 variant, NB.1.8.1, has also emerged in China. You can read more about it here.
