Digital Creator Invites American Health-Care Workers to Vancouver Island
The digital creator of a popular social gathering on Vancouver Island, Tod Maffin, has openly invited American health-care workers to relocate in a bid to alleviate staffing shortages in the region.
Nanaimo Infusion Event
Maffin’s Nanaimo Infusion event in April attracted about 500 attendees from the U.S. and Canada. A follow-up event took place at Maffin Sutton Park in Nanaimo on Oct. 4, with around 200 attendees dressed in red and white. Maffin revealed that the event’s footage would be featured in a longer video with a yet-to-be-revealed theme.
Healthcare Recruitment Drive
Maffin, alongside local volunteers, initiated a recruitment drive for medical personnel. He reported a high interest from healthcare workers considering moving to the mid-Island region. As a result, the Infusion website has been repositioned for healthcare recruitment. Maffin stated that nurses are scheduled to fly to Nanaimo to begin work at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
Overcoming Challenges
Maffin acknowledged some barriers faced by prospective nurses. However, he praised the province’s efforts in simplifying the process. Janice Perrino, Nanaimo city councillor and Nanaimo Regional Hospital District board chairperson, highlighted the ongoing challenges in healthcare staffing. She emphasized that improved hospital facilities could help increase workforce numbers.
Supportive Community for Newcomers
Maffin noted an existing community eager to assist newcomers from the U.S. “There’s a Discord server with 1,800 members, most of whom are American healthcare workers,” he said. Brandy Frye, a nurse who recently relocated from Los Angeles, praised the welcoming atmosphere of Nanaimo and the simplified process for nurses.
