Dr. Kimberly van Noort, appointed interim chancellor of UNC Asheville in 2023, has been elected to officially fill the post, following a unanimous vote by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors.

UNC System President Peter Hans proposed Dr. van Noort to the board after a nationwide search that started with over 130 candidates. The pool was whittled down to three finalists, recommended by a 13-member advisory committee and the UNCA Board of Trustees.

Dr. van Noort will officially assume her role on Jan. 1, 2024.

Expressing her excitement, Dr. van Noort emphasized UNC Asheville’s potential, recalling her first campus visit back in 2016. She confirmed her initial impressions of the institution’s potential have only been reinforced during her service as interim provost and chancellor.

Dr. Van Noort’s tenure at UNCA has emphasized enrollment, financial aid, and nurturing a student-oriented approach. These initiatives led to a 25% increase in first-year students last fall and an impressive 90% retention rate among the student body.

President Hans praised UNC Asheville’s unique role among public universities, expressing his belief that Dr. Van Noort’s humanities background and administrative skills make her the ideal candidate to lead and strengthen UNC Asheville.
