More than 300 runners participated in the sixth annual Mary Free Bed Limb Loss Awareness 5K in Kentwood, Michigan. The event aimed to raise awareness of limb loss, build community, and generate funds for Kentwood’s adaptive recreation programs. Among the participants was Alex Trevino, a patient from Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital who had both his legs amputated due to Strep A, and was able to participate in the race after months of hard work and physical therapy.


Annual Mary Free Bed Limb Loss Awareness 5K Attracts Over 300 Participants

On Saturday, over 300 runners participated in the annual Mary Free Bed Limb Loss Awareness 5K in Kentwood, Michigan. The event, which began at 10 a.m., aimed to raise awareness about limb loss, foster community, and solicit funds for Kentwood’s adaptive recreation initiatives.

Around 20 patients from Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital, including Alex Trevino, took part in the race. Trevino had been in a coma for a month due to a severe bout of Strep A, leading to the amputation of both his legs. Despite significant challenges, he completed his first 5K race after months of intensive physical therapy at the Mary Free Bed.

For Trevino, participating in the race was not only a personal challenge but also an incredible opportunity to support the very cause that had significantly influenced his life. “I wanted to challenge myself a bit… and do this to see if I can make it through the whole thing,” said Trevino.
