Escaped Fremont County Jail Inmate Captured in Colorado Springs

An inmate, Kegan Vanvliet, 45, who escaped from the Fremont County Detention Center has been captured in Colorado Springs by authorities. Vanvliet escaped the county jail on Friday at approximately 1:00 p.m. He was being held on charges including criminal attempt/murder, possession of a dangerous weapon, prohibited use of a weapon, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, and domestic violence, according to officials with the county jail.
After the escape was reported, a heavy police presence was reported in the areas of Hwy 50, Mackinzie Avenue, Grandview Avenue, and areas on the eastern edge of Canon City and the public was asked to avoid these areas.
Information developed by the U.S. Marshall Service Colorado Violent Offender Task Force, along with Colorado State Patrol, indicated that Vanvliet was in Colorado Springs. K9 Officer Lofgren and K9 Riggs were deployed in the area, warning Vanvliet to stop or he would be bit. Vanvliet stopped running and obeyed all commands, leading to his capture, according to CBS News Colorado’s news partner KKTV.
U.S. Marshals Service Denver confirmed the arrest of the fugitive just after midnight in a tweet.
