House Ethics Committee Issues Subpoena for Ex-Girlfriend of Rep. Matt Gaetz

The House Ethics Committee has issued a subpoena regarding Rep. Matt Gaetz, targeting his ex-girlfriend in the ongoing investigation into the Florida Republican.

The committee demands Gaetz’s former girlfriend to testify via Zoom on Feb. 29, as stated in a letter to her lawyer. The subpoenaed woman, who will remain anonymous, previously planned to plead the fifth on any questions related to Gaetz.

“We will comply with the subpoena and will appear before the committee,” confirmed her lawyer, Tim Jansen. He added that his client will invoke her Fifth Amendment rights when questioned by the Committee. The House committee has not yet commented on the issue.

Committee investigators are particularly interested in allegations of Gaetz’s involvement in sex trafficking, drug use, and potential lobbying violations. Gaetz’s ex-girlfriend, a former Capitol Hill worker, reportedly has relevant information about these matters, as well as about a minor involved in a sex trafficking investigation that was closed by the Department of Justice without any charges against Gaetz.

Since the investigation’s start, the committee has reached out to other key witnesses, including the woman who allegedly had sex with Gaetz as a minor, and Joel Greenberg, a former close friend of Gaetz who was sentenced to 11 years in prison.

In response, Gaetz criticized the Ethics Committee for “‘trying to weaponize their process'” and claimed this to be a payback for ousting Kevin McCarthy. “The American people will see through this sham,” Gaetz stated.
