Excelsior Springs Hospital Expands Pulmonary Services with Dr. Samiran Patel
Excelsior Springs Hospital (ESH) Outpatient Specialty Clinics are now offering advanced pulmonary services, under the expertise of Dr. Samiran Patel. Dr. Patel, who is renowned for his personalized patient care, is bringing his years of experience to Excelsior Springs residents.
A board-certified pulmonologist, Dr. Patel specializes in treating various lung and respiratory conditions such as sleep apnea, pneumonia, pulmonary and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, pulmonary heart disease, pleural effusion, and pulmonary fibrosis.
Dr. Patel completed his medical education in India and immigrated to the United States in the 1990s. After completing his fellowship in pulmonary and critical care in Arizona, he worked in the St. Luke’s Health System in Kansas City for over 15 years.
Today, Dr. Patel focuses on patients with chronic respiratory diseases who require long-term ventilator support. He currently visits ESH three days a month for outpatient pulmonary consultations and provides inpatient telemedicine services.
He stresses the importance of outpatient pulmonary clinics, especially for patients with COPD, pulmonary nodules, asthma, lung cancer, and interstitial lung disease. “Outpatient care can help catch problems early and provide treatment before they worsen and require hospitalization,” he states.
All evaluations and tests ordered by Dr. Patel at ESH—including lung function tests, breathing assessments, oxygen level checks, six-minute walk tests, arterial blood tests, CT scans, and echocardiograms—are performed locally. For more advanced procedures like bronchoscopies or lung biopsies, patients are usually referred to larger care centers like St. Luke’s.
His philosophy of patient care emphasizes prevention and individualized treatment. Alongside pulmonary disease, he urges patients to prioritize their overall health, recommending avoidance of alcohol and smoking, adequate sleep, regular exercise, and a healthy diet.
Despite the challenges of rural healthcare, Dr. Patel appreciates working in smaller, remote areas like ESH where resources might be limited. He commends the hardworking community and staff at ESH, stating that the accomplishments with their limited resources are truly impressive.
