Importance of Flu and COVID-19 Vaccination
Elderly individuals, those with underlying health conditions, and pregnant women are highly encouraged to receive both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines, says Ellen Niemitalo, Interim Associate Director of Preventive Health. Vaccines are proven to prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and death, and lower the chances of Long COVID, a prolonged condition that can develop post-infection.
According to the CDC, it’s safe and beneficial to receive the flu and COVID-19 vaccines simultaneously. For queries, consult your healthcare provider.
Cost and Payment Options for Vaccines
Most people can avail the updated COVID-19 booster or a flu shot with no out-of-pocket expenses. Payment options include:
- Most private insurers cover vaccines. THD accepts Medicaid, SoonerCare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Community Care, Health Choice, Cigna, and Medicare.
- Children up to 18 years can get vaccines for free through the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program, subject to certain conditions. A parent or legal guardian must accompany all children under 18 during vaccination.
- Uninsured adults or those with insurance that doesn’t cover all COVID-19 vaccine costs can get the vaccine at no cost through the CDC’s Bridge Access Program.
- The regular injectable flu vaccine costs $25, high dose vaccine costs $63. Costs may be waived for qualifying uninsured adults.
