Grand Rapids’ Parks and Recreation Department offers Free Sled Libraries this Winter
Grand Rapids, Mich – This winter, the city of Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Department is making fun accessible with its free sled libraries! Richmond Park, one of the locations housing a sled library, was visited by FOX 17 on Wednesday.
The locals, both kids and adults, seem to be thrilled with the initiative. “We’re just having some fun sledding. It’s the first time we’ve been because there hasn’t been a lot of snow,” said Grady. Desmond and Jayme Copeland, a local mom, echoed similar sentiments, praising the sledding hill and sharing their kids’ excitement.
The sledding libraries, a first-of-its-kind offering from the city, are aimed at addressing the cost barrier associated with outdoor activities, according to GR Outside Supervisor Sam Truby. He explained, “We decided let’s just leave sleds in the park and let people come to them whenever they’re ready.”
Each sledding library houses around 15 sleds, available for families to use freely. Sara VanderVelde, another local mom, appreciated the provision and hoped more such sled libraries would pop up across the city. Landon, a young local, encouraged other kids to leave their screens and enjoy the fresh outdoors.
For those interested, the sled libraries are located at:
- Mulick Park (Parking lot open, plowed)
- Plaster Creek Family Park (Street parking available)
- Richmond Park (Main parking lot off Richmond Ave open, plowed)
While the sled libraries are free to use, the department is also accepting donations to help it continue providing more such facilities for the Grand Rapids community.
