The Grand Rapids Community College softball team celebrated three victories in a row while facing Delta College Pioneers in two consecutive doubleheaders. Their winning streak came to an end during the opening of the Michigan Community College Athletic Association Northern Conference, with scores of 12-4, 15-2, 12-8, and a final loss of 7-8.
Freshman Macey Springer initiated Thursday’s doubleheader as the starting pitcher, maintaining a strong defense and leading the Raiders to an 8-run lead. In their next inning, they continued to build their lead with a run by Macy Huver, concluding with a 12-4 win.
Head Coach Chuck White commented on their performance, “We’re swinging the bat well. I don’t see a reason why we shouldn’t do that again.”
Continuing their winning streak, the Raiders began the second game with high energy. Sophomore Samara Kolehouse secured two RBIs, building a lead the Pioneers couldn’t reach, resulting in a 15-2 win for the Raiders.
Despite a slow start, the Raiders retained their momentum in the first game of Friday’s doubleheader. After a stiff competition in the fifth inning, the Raiders managed to turn the tide, securing a 12-8 win.
The final game resulted in the first loss for the Raiders in the series. Despite a strong start, the Pioneers scored a grand slam, leading to a tight scoreboard. The Raiders were not able to catch up, resulting in a close 8-7 loss.
The Raiders, now with a 7-8 record, are set to continue their MCCAA Northern Conference series with a doubleheader against Bay College on GRCC’s home field at Belknap Park on Friday, April 5.
