Health Secretary’s Vital Update on Social Care
TL/DR –
The author acknowledges that the National Health Service (NHS) is going through a massive crisis and this is not merely political rhetoric but a daily reality faced by many. The current government is set to be honest about the challenges and seriously tackle them, with the underlying policy now being that the NHS is broken. They announce that talks will begin to end the industrial action of the BMA junior doctors and they have received mandate from millions of voters for change and reform of the NHS, and they are aware that it will take collective effort and time to fix the health service.
Addressing the NHS Crisis
The NHS is currently confronting its largest crisis ever, a fact we emphasized during the election campaign. This is not political rhetoric but a daily truth for millions of patients who feel let down.
Past governments have been reluctant to acknowledge these realities. However, to cure an ailment, we must first identify it. This government pledges to be forthright about the country’s challenges and take them head-on.
Starting today, this department acknowledges that the NHS is in a severe state. This is evident from the experiences of patients not getting adequate care and NHS staff who perceive their best isn’t sufficient.
As a kidney cancer survivor, I owe my life to the NHS. Today, I can begin to return that favor by working towards rescuing our NHS.
Having recently communicated with the BMA junior doctors committee, I am pleased to announce that discussions to end their industrial action will commence next week.
We vowed during the campaign to expedite negotiations, and we are fulfilling that promise. This government, endorsed by millions of voters for NHS change and reform, is committed to making the NHS dependable again.
It will be a journey – we have never claimed that the NHS could be mended instantaneously.
This will require a collective effort. My department, every government member, and the 1.4 million NHS employees are on a mission to revamp our health system.
This collaboration has been successful in the past. During our last tenure, we collaborated with NHS staff to achieve the shortest wait times and highest patient satisfaction in history. We’ve done it once, and we are confident we can do it again.
This endeavor begins today.
