A Mesa High School student in Arizona was apprehended on Wednesday morning after the school’s newly implemented weapons detection system discovered a firearm when the student attempted to access the campus.

Mesa Public Schools, the district running Mesa High School, unveiled the weapons detection system for the first time on Wednesday.

“Safety is of paramount importance at Mesa Public Schools. There is no room for weapons in our learning institutions. The introduction of a weapons detection system adds another layer of security. We aim to dissuade anyone from bringing weapons into our campuses,” read a district statement.

Weapons Detection System Discovers Firearm for the First Time

In its communication to families, the district revealed that this marked the initial occasion the weapons detection system had located a firearm. The system is currently being introduced across all district high schools, and full implementation is expected ahead of the graduation ceremonies next week.

The district has been trialing the system at Skyline High School for the past month, and has plans to install the detectors in its junior high schools at the commencement of the next academic year.

District personnel informed that Mesa police arrested the student immediately after the discovery of the firearm. The student had not been threatening other students or staff members with the weapon when it was found.
