Hunter Biden Responds to House Republicans’ Request for Testimony
Hunter Biden responded to House Republicans’ request for closed-door testimony on Wednesday, amid the impending impeachment inquiry vote targeting his father, President Joe Biden. Speaking outside the Capitol in Washington, D.C., he insisted he would answer House Republicans’ questions, but only in public.
Last month, Chairman James Comer of the House Oversight Committee subpoenaed Hunter Biden to sit for a closed-door deposition. This forms part of the committee’s impeachment inquiry into President Biden. Hunter Biden, however, stated he’d only testify in a public forum.
“I am here to testify at a public hearing today, to answer the committee’s questions,” he noted. “What are they afraid of? I’m here, I’m ready.” He criticized House Republicans, saying, “They have no shame.”
He accused Republicans of lacking “fairness or decency” in their probe and of repeatedly lying. He also claimed that they had invaded his privacy and attacked his wife and children. While acknowledging his personal mistakes, he stated that suggesting these as grounds for an impeachment inquiry was absurd.
GAOP leaders criticized Hunter Biden’s refusal to testify in private. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan expressed disappointment, saying, “If you do it in an open format now, you’re gonna get filibusters, you’re gonna get speeches, you’re gonna get all kinds of things. We want facts.” Jordan expects Hunter Biden to come in for deposition and hinted at potential contempt proceedings.
The impeachment inquiry resolution would direct three committees to continue investigating Joe Biden to see if there are “sufficient grounds” to impeach him. Republicans have focused on the Biden family’s business dealings, particularly those of Hunter Biden, but have found no hard evidence of the president’s direct involvement or benefit.
Hunter Biden reiterated that his father was not financially involved in any of his business. “My father was not financially involved in any of my business. Not as a practicing lawyer, not as a board member of Burisma, not in my partnership with a Chinese private businessman, and certainly not as an artist,” he said.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has defended the probe, calling it a “legal decision.” House Democratic Caucus Chair Rep. Pete Aguilar labelled the probe as an attempt to politically hurt President Biden and help former President Trump get reelected.
