
Imperial Community Members Earn New Year Honours Recognition

Imperial College London’s researchers have been honored in the 2024 New Year Honours list for their contributions to various fields. Professor Dame Molly Stevens was awarded a DBE for her services to medicine, particularly in the area of biomaterials, Professor Mala Rao received a CBE for her contributions to public health, the NHS, and equality and diversity, and Professor Richard Templer was given an OBE for his work in climate innovation. Additionally, Imperial alumna Dame Marit Mohn, who donated £25m to create the Mohn Centre for Children’s Health and Wellbeing, was recognized with a DBE for her services to philanthropy.
Imperial Researchers Acknowledged for Exceptional Contributions
Imperial researchers have received recognition for their exceptional contributions to medicine, public health, climate innovation and philanthropy in the 2024 New Year Honours list.
Professor Dame Molly Stevens
Professor Dame Molly Stevens, working in Imperial’s Departments of Materials and Bioengineering, was awarded a DBE for her services to medicine. A renowned leader in the field of Biomedical Materials and Regenerative Medicine, she has been at Imperial since 2004 and was appointed the John Black Professor of Bionanoscience at the University of Oxford in 2023. She continues to hold a part-time professorship at Imperial and leads the internationally recognised team, The Stevens Group.
Professor Mala Rao, CBE
Another distinguished Imperial academic, Professor Mala Rao from the School of Public Health, was honoured with a CBE for her services to public health, the NHS, equality, and diversity. A globally respected advocate for race equality and climate action, she is currently the Director of the Ethnicity and Health Unit and Senior Clinical Fellow at Imperial’s School of Public Health.
Professor Richard Templer, OBE
Professor Richard Templer from the Department of Chemistry and Imperial’s Grantham Institute was awarded an OBE for his services to climate innovation. As the Emeritus Professor of Climate Innovation, Templer has been instrumental in driving solutions to climate change through his work with Climate-KIC UK.
Dame Marit Mohn
Imperial alumna Dame Marit Mohn receives a DBE for her services to philanthropy. Her generous £25m donation to Imperial led to the creation of the Mohn Centre for Children’s Health and Wellbeing. A staunch supporter of education and community development, she has championed numerous causes across education, arts, culture, science, heritage, and health, donating over £100 million to date.
