TL/DR –
Kristie Hollingsworth, a breast cancer survivor, has partnered with ArtPrize and a team of developers to create a unique fundraising project. The project, on a website called FaceFunding.com, works by crowdsourcing selfies, each submitted with a $10 donation that benefits a nonprofit. The goal is to collect 500,000 selfies from people who have been affected by cancer, with the money raised being split between ArtPrize and New Day Foundation, a Michigan nonprofit that supports families facing cancer.
A New Art Form Makes its Debut at ArtPrize
This year’s ArtPrize will feature a unique artwork that fosters collaboration and stewardship, a first for this competition. The piece, not part of the contest entries, is the passion project of former ArtPrize worker Kristie Hollingsworth, who was diagnosed with breast cancer just before the event began in 2022.
Her story of strength took shape when Developing Dreams hired her. This company, led by Jeremy Burgin and three other developers, enlisted Hollingsworth to bring their idea to life.
Working with Developing Dreams, Hollingsworth initiated an innovative fundraising initiative on FaceFunding.com. This platform facilitates nonprofit fundraising by compiling selfies, each donated with a $10 contribution. The result is a unique art piece representing each cause.
Breast cancer survivors promote ‘normal, beautiful’ option
For the ArtPrize campaign, Hollingsworth recruited ArtPrize Executive Director Catlin Whitington to devise the concept. Hollingsworth envisions the piece as a symbol of hope and community, embodying the mission of bringing people together through art.
Housed at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, the ArtPrize artwork is a 9-by-20-foot LED projection map. Hollingsworth aims to compile 500,000 selfies from those affected by cancer, like her, to be displayed.
Funds raised will be split between ArtPrize and New Day Foundation. ArtPrize will use its share to grow the competition and attract talent, while New Day Foundation, a Michigan nonprofit assisting families facing cancer, will use the remainder to support their work and establish a permanent space in Grand Rapids.
Hollingsworth, along with the Developing Dreams team, hopes this Grand Rapids piece will inspire similar fundraising models globally. The mission begins in Grand Rapids, a city known for its commitment to art and community.
