TL/DR –
Republican Kari Lake, who is running for the U.S. Senate, has been extending olive branches to Republicans she previously clashed with during her 2022 race for governor, and has gained the backing of at least one top Republican lawmaker. She has also shifted her focus from her insistence that the 2022 gubernatorial election was rigged against her, to issues such as border security and inflation. However, Lake continues to contest her 2022 loss in court, recently requesting an Arizona appeals court to nullify the result of that election and hold a new one.
Republican Kari Lake Rebrands for U.S. Senate Campaign Despite Ongoing Election Dispute
Kari Lake, a prominent Republican figure, is reshaping her image for her U.S. Senate campaign, while still challenging her 2022 defeat in Arizona’s governor’s race. Recently, Lake has been reaching out to Republicans she previously alienated during her 2022 gubernatorial run, aiming to gain moderate support crucial for her ongoing campaign. She also sought the backing of national GOP leaders to boost her candidacy.
She has largely shifted her focus from claims that the 2022 governor’s election was rigged against her, to Republicans’ popular issues like border security and inflation. However, Lake continues to challenge her 2022 loss in court.
Last week, over a year after losing to Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, she appealed to an Arizona court to nullify the election result and call for a new one. Despite her previous attempts being rejected in court, Lake persists in her claims of election rigging.
After her 2022 election loss, she raised millions of dollars while appearing on right-leaning media outlets. Less than a quarter of these donations came from Arizona, according to Arizona Mirror.
Lake’s campaign recently responded to media inquiries by stating that Lake has called to decertify the result of the 2020 election as recently as August.
The Lake campaign also pointed out that Democratic Senate candidate Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., made a similar remark about former President Donald Trump’s legitimacy due to alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Despite her election denialism causing some national Republicans to be skeptical of her candidacy, GOP leaders have urged her to focus on her Senate campaign, as stated by a national Republican strategist.
