Marquette, MI native, John R. “Mike” Mattson, 80, passed away on November 11, 2023 at Aurora Baycare Medical Center in Green Bay, following a stroke. Born on March 10, 1943 in Ishpeming, Michigan, Mike was a lifelong Upper Peninsula resident and 1961 graduate of Negaunee High School.
Following a stint at Olson Motors in Marquette, Mike founded and operated his own auto repair business, Mattson’s Auto Center in Sands Township from 1980 until his 2015 retirement. He spent his free time auto racing at Sands Speedway and Norway Speedway among other tracks in Escanaba, Wisconsin, and Canada. Mike, a fan and crew chief for his grandsons, also enjoyed hunting, golfing, riding side-by-sides, and wintering in Lake Havasu City, Arizona with his wife of nearly 50 years, Debbie.
Mike is survived by his wife, the former Deborah Klit, their five children and 11 grandchildren, two sisters, a brother, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, and a sister.
The Mattson family will welcome relatives and friends to a memorial service on November 27th at Redeemer Lutheran Church prior to a celebration of Mike’s life at American Legion Post 44 in Marquette. Condolences can be shared at canalefuneral.com.
