ISHPEMING, MI – Neil Mason Chapman Passes Away at 88
Neil Mason Chapman, 88, of 835 Patriot St., North Lake Location, departed this life on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility, where he lived for the last three months.
Born on Dec. 6, 1934, in Negaunee, MI, Neil was the son of E. Gertrude (Oja) and Mason Chapman. He spent his childhood in Ishpeming, graduating from Ishpeming High School in 1953. Neil served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957 before marrying Joan Pepin in 1958. He worked for McKee Construction Co., afterwards becoming a payroll clerk at Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co.’s Pioneer Pellet Plant and Empire Mine for 27 years before retiring in 1992.
An active member of Bethel Lutheran Church and the Ishpeming Elks Lodge #447, Neil also enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, reading, and listening to and singing country music. As “Papa Neil,” he loved attending his grandchildren’s events and activities.
Neil leaves behind a daughter, two sons, brothers, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife, Joan Chapman, a brother, and sisters-in-law.
The memorial service for Neil will be held on Monday, Dec. 4, 2023, at Bethel Lutheran Church. Family and friends can pay their respects from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by the service conducted by Rev. Tim Johnston. Interment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens.
