Sandra Adrian Quinnell, Notable Educator, Passes Away at 89

On October 10, 2023, Sandra Adrian Quinnell, renowned Marquette educator and arts enthusiast, passed away at 89 years old at Mission Point of Ishpeming.

Born in Racine, Wisconsin on July 24, 1934, Sandra was raised in Marquette, Michigan where she attended Graveraet High School and Northern Michigan University. She excelled in her teaching career, which began in Milford, Michigan after marrying Robert Wester in 1955. She returned to Marquette six years later, teaching at K.I. Sawyer Elementary School until her retirement.

Beyond teaching, Sandra devoted herself to the Lake Superior Art Association and Art on the Rocks. In retirement, she promoted local libraries and led fundraising efforts. In 1978, she married Ed Quinnell and together they adopted her niece Amy and nephew Carl following the death of her sister Donna.

Sandra and Ed were known for their hospitality at their Lake Kawbawgam home. Their love for travel brought them to various U.S states and Europe, where Sandra indulged her passion for the French language.

Survivors and Celebration of Life

Sandra leaves behind her son Rick Wester, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, stepchildren, step-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of Sandra’s life will be held next summer. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Peter White Library or Lake Superior Art Association in her name is encouraged.
