Zebra rescued after six days on the loose in Riverbend neighborhood

A runaway zebra that sparked global interest was safely captured in North Bend, Washington, according to Regional Animal Services of King County (RASKC).

Escaping during transport, zebra found safe

The female zebra, named “Shug,” was found in the Riverbend neighborhood after a nearly week-long escape. Shug will now be transported to Montana, the original destination for the group of four zebras before their escape.

Zebra’s escape led to community-wide search

Shug and the other zebras were being transported from Winlock, Washington, to Anaconda, Montana, on April 28. They escaped during a stop near the North Bend area to fix a trailer issue. Though the other three zebras were captured within hours, Shug remained on the loose, spotted by local residents over several days.

Successful rescue of the runaway zebra

Local citizens, animal control officers, and RASKC joined forces to rescue Shug on Friday evening. RASKC reported that she appears healthy despite her woodland adventure. The agency thanked the King County Sheriff’s Office, King County Parks, Washington State Patrol, the city of North Bend, and local residents for their assistance in rescuing the zebra.
